Mothers Day

This year we celebrated Mothers Day with Joe, Lisa, Anthony and Matthew. We had a lovely lunch in Watsons Bay. It was all good, until Jacob got tired and decided to have a tantrum in the park - I had to have a serious talk with him. After that we took a little scenic walk to the lookout point and then headed back to our place for dinner. It was a lovely day and here are the pics

His Holiness, the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso in Sydney

Dalai Lama is a Mongolian title meaning 'ocean of wisdom'. Tibetans believe that the Dalai Lama is an enlightened being, who has chosen rebirth as a way to be of benefit to all living beings.

The Dalai Lama was born to a peasant family on 6 July 1935 in the small village of Takster in the north-east province of Amdo. At the age of two, he was recognised as the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama, and at the age of six, began his monastic education in Lhasa. In early March 1959, in front of 20,000 scholars, the Dalai Lama passed his final examination to qualify as a Geshe, or Doctor of Buddhist Philosophy, with honours.

In 1950, the Chinese army invaded Tibet. Although he was only 15 years old at the time, the Dalai Lama was called upon by the Tibetan Government to take full political responsibility as Head of State and Government of Tibet.
The Dalai Lama and his immediate family escaped Tibet and crossed the border into India on 30 March 1959, where he was granted asylum.

The Dalai Lama did not travel outside India until 1967, when he visited Japan and Thailand. Since then, he has visited more than 45 countries, giving Buddhist teachings and talks on a wide variety of spiritual and ethical topics and urging world leaders to assist him in bringing about a peaceful resolution to the Tibetan situation.

On 6th of June The Dalai Lama arrived in Perth and has spread his message of love, compassion and tolerance all over Australia.

The Dalai Lama gave his last public address in Australia this morning in Sydney’s Domain, and despite threatening skies, the sun shone and around 12 000 people (including us) came to hear one of the great leaders and thinkers of our time. Funny enough, only few minutes after His Holiness' speach had ended, all of the sudden, heavy rain started to pour down. It's been raining on and off all day. It was raining all night yesterday as well. Coincidence?!?

Mother's Day

Sunday was Mother's day in France. So once again we were all gathered at my parents for a lovely Sunday ... Poor Mum, this is not how it should work, having so many people for lunch, she should rest on Mother's day. Unfortunately for them we couldn't have had lunch all together in my tiny flat. And nothing is better than a beautiful garden and playing soccer with the kids when summer is almost here !

Next article I'll have to post photos of my new flat. I still don't have much furniture but at least I can give you an idea ;-)

Sev in Cambridge

This weekend I visited Anna in Cambridge (my flatmate from Manly, she is british and back in the UK). We enjoyed a walk through the city, the colleges, the river etc.

The University of Cambridge is one of the oldest universities in the world and one of the largest in the United Kingdom. Its reputation for outstanding academic achievement is known world-wide and reflects the intellectual achievement of its students.

The Tiger Shark is one of the largest sharks. Mature sharks average 3.25 to 4.25m and weigh 385 to 635kg. It is found in many of the tropical and temperate regions of the world's oceans, and is especially common around islands in the central Pacific. This shark is a solitary hunter, usually hunting at night. Its name is derived from the dark stripes down its body, which fade as the shark matures.
The tiger shark is a dangerous predator, known for eating a wide range of items. Its usual diet consists of fish, seals, smaller sharks, birds, squid and turtles. It has sometimes been found with detritus such as licence plates or pieces of old tires in its digestive trackt. It is notorious for attacks on swimmers, divers and surfers in Hawaii; and is often referred to as the "bane of Hawaiian surfers" and "the wastebasket of the sea".
The tiger shark is second only to the great white in number of recorded human fatalities and is considered, along with the great white, bull shark and the oceanic whitetip shark to be one of the sharks most dangerous to humans. Generally, tiger sharks are sluggish, but they can move quickly when feeding, and should be treated carefully on the rare occasions they are sighted. If you see one while diving, calmly leave the water, keeping it in sight at all times.

It was few weeks ago when this 3.2m male Tiger Shark was caught in the net, died and brought to the Fisheries Research Centre (where I happen to work:) for collection of data for research. I have never seen a tiger shark so close before (thank God!) it was awesome feeling to be able to touch it but I really hope I will never get an opportunity again as this monster is one of the top 3 most dangerous sharks in the world!!!

Royal visitors in Sydney

Cruise liner Queen Mary 2 madness hit Sydney last Tuesday. It was Australia's turn for cruise ship-induced madness as the Queen Mary 2 and Queen Elizabeth 2 joined each other in the city. A crowd, according to local papers, at more than 200,000 people lined the shores of the harbour to see the historic meeting of the famed ocean liners, the first time since World War II that two Cunard Queens have visited Sydney simultaneously. The celebration, which included fireworks over the harbour, caused widespread gridlock and was front page news in Sydney papers. Luckily the traffic didnt affect us as we caught a train from Rockdale. Clever ;)

At 23 storeys high (and151,400-tonne), the QM2 took possession of Sydney Harbour. Too tall to sail under the bridge, too long to berth at Circular Quay, it made the Opera House look like the outhouse.
